LeBron James rules the NBA with a chalk-covered fist. The self-proclaimed king has added two rings to his fingers, and he’s returned to Cleveland, where his career began, still looking for more. Many consider him to be among the most dominant athletes on the planet. When we talk about the idea of a real-life Hunger Games in our friend group, the discussion usually boils down to LeBron versus Usain Bolt, which is good company to be in. He’s not just an athlete, he’s an influence. So what does he have to do with Kia?
As of this month: everything.
The Cavalier recently signed a multi-year multi-million dollar endorsement deal with Kia to be their luxury ambassador with a specific focus on the K900. In a twist for endorsement deals, LeBron approached Kia about representing the car.
Tim Chaney, vice president of marketing at Kia Motors America said, “It was a great call to get. We were not actively seeking another endorser, but LeBron told us, after driving the car around this summer, that he liked it so much, that we decided to partner with him. He brought us instant credibility.”
Rolling around in my K900. Love this car!! #Kia #TheLand #Akron #StriveForGreatness
In the past, James has donated Kias he won as the league MVP to charity, but something about the K900 appealed to him on a deeper level, one that he wasn’t going to pass up.
On the deal, James said:
“[Kia is] also the title sponsor of the NBA and they did a lot of great promoting as far as the game, and me being one of the top guys in our league, to try to promote the game, I thought it was fitting.
Everything that I do, I want it to be authentic … they’re a pretty cool brand to be with. I’m just excited I’m able to be with them.”
We just can’t wait to see the marketing that results from this partnership. Kia’s campaigns always entertain, and they turned another NBA Player, Blake Griffin, into a super hero. Who knows what they’ll do when they’re working with one who is already a king.
